Changes to login arrangements from the UK Data Archive (providers of the Economic and Social Data Service - ESDS)

Changes to login arrangements from August 2008

We are contacting all UK Data Archive users, and users of the resources of the Economic and Social Data Service (ESDS) and of the ESRC Census Programme (Census.ac.uk) as we will be changing our login for these resources to implement Federated Access Management (Shibboleth).

Our aims are to increase the level of security of our systems, while limiting the disruption to users as much as possible.

All users must log in before 25 July 2008 and provide a memorable word, and also check that all personal details are up to date. Users unable to do this may need to re-register after this date.

Please use this link http://www.data-archive.ac.uk/aandp/access/update_me.asp to
update user details

Even if you use a combination of the resources provided via the UK Data Archive you need only use this link and update your details once.

Finding information on UpToDate

When browsing information on UpToDate, due to security reasons the table of contents has no hyperlinks.

This is a general restriction for all users worldwide. The reason being the security of the content. In the past, the software pirates took advantage of the Hyperlinked Table of Content and easily downloaded all the linked topics at one go.

UpToDate therefore decided to remove the hyperlinks for security reason. This apply to the system worldwide; and by no means is a specific restriction to NHS Scotland.

So basically there is no facility to browse right down to the table of contents. When you find a section that does not have a hyperlink you can copy and paste it into the search box and you will then get the information you require.

Construction Briefing - service closure reminder‏

30th June 2008 sees the closure of all Barbour construction information services (Construction Expert - Architectural, Building Services, Civil and Structural, Building Control and Property & Facilities Management).

This means that the Construction Briefing section of Barbour Indexes will no longer be available.

Virtual Training - technical requirements‏

I received a query regarding the technical requirements needed to take an online training session, namely Refworks. The following information was provided by Refworks themselves. Some health boards have restrictions on what can be accessed and downloaded. Most of the online training we offer requires you download WebEx software and the message below is specific to this software.

This information can be passed on to IT departments if you feel this would help you get access to this resource.

BEGIN MESSAGE

Here's what WebEx says about requirements to attend an "event" (which is what we run):

What do I need to attend events on Microsoft Windows?

Minimum requirements to host or attend fully interactive events using Event Manager for Windows: Windows 98, Me, NT, 2000, or XP
Intel x86 (Pentium 400MHZ +) or compatible processor
Microsoft Internet Explorer 5, 6, Mozilla 1.6 or later, or Netscape4.7,7.x JavaScript and cookies enabled in the browser
56K or faster Internet connection

Here are the Mac requirements:

Minimum requirements to host or attend fully interactive events for Mac OS:
Mac OS 10.2.x or later
Internet Explorer 5.2 or Safari 1.1 or later
JavaScript and cookies enabled for the browser
Java 1.3.1 or later

The small plug-in that downloads is minimal in size. I don't believe it can be networked -- it installs on each machine when you log in to the meeting (if you don't already have it installed). We don't use Flash. You can pre-download the event manager from our webex site. Just go to https://refworks.webex.com. Click on the Event Manager tab. When the screen changes, click on Set Up from the left-hand navigation. When it expands, click on Event Manager and you can install the plug-in. All WebEx does is display our computer on yours -- we don't have access to any files or anything on the computer, you are simply viewing(almost like watching a streaming video, but live).

Most of the sessions run between 75 and 90 minutes, depending on the amount of user questions at the end. We are going to start running some shorter, more single-topic sessions like we are currently doing for Write-N-Cite III.

Finally, please note that everything covered in our webinars is also covered in our online tutorials. If WebEx does not work out for your network, your users do have an alternative. We have had very few users who cannot install the plug-in -- even on restricted computers, so perhaps it's worth trying to download it and see how it works.

Accessing UpToDate

We have had a number of queries regarding users being unable to access the UpToDate service and we just wanted to remind users of how to best access this resource.

To access UpToDate, this url, it is

http://www.clinicaldecisions.scot.nhs.uk/Authentication.aspx?target=UTD¤tURL=/home.aspx&=reqlogin=true&url=http://www.uptodate.com/home/index.html

Another route of access is the following Go to the Clinical Decisions portal at

http://www.clinicaldecisions.scot.nhs.uk/

Under the search box there is a section called 'Quick Links' where you can access UpToDate.

You can also access this resource from the full list of databases.

Finally do not go to UpToDate home page. The options above should provide you with access.

OVID journals collection

Since last year a number of you have reported not being able to access certain titles via OVID where previously we did have access. The reason for this is that the publisher of these titles Blackwells has merged with the publisher Wiley and as a result this has affected access to a number of titles from our Journals@OVIDcollection.

OVID have informed me that they have asked the publisher to review this access so that we get some consitency on what we are entitled to through our subscription and we will also be meeting with OVID to discuss this matter further.

Please report any titles that you come across as being available on the e-Library but then not providing full-text when you access the OVID interface to derek.boyle@nes.scot.nhs.uk

Oxford Handbook of Genitourinary Medicine, HIV and AIDS
Social Determinants of Health

In terms of MD Consult journals, a number of the titles in MD Consult are available via other providers, especially Science Direct, however we will no longer be providing access to the following journals:
American Journal of Kidney Diseases
American Journal of Medicine
American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology
American Journal of Sports Medicine
Journal of Pediatrics
Journal of the American Society of Echocardiography
Lancet Infectious Diseases
Lancet Neurology
Lancet Oncology
The Clinics series

Again due to the same budgetary pressures, we will also be reviewing our access to Web of Science and the pharmacuetical resources Martindale, Stockley's and Herbal Medicines and it is possible that access will be removed in the coming weeks but this can not be clarified at this point in time.

We will be adding the following resources to the e-Library in April but it must be stressed that these are not replacments for the above resources:

Dynamed

DynaMed is a medical information database with nearly 3,000 clinical topic summaries. Designed for use at the point-of-care, providing bestavailable evidence and updated daily.

UptoDate

UpToDate is specifically designed to answer the clinical questions that arise in daily practice and to do so quickly and easily so that it can be used right at the point of care. Our physician editors and authors review and update our content on a continuous basis and a new, peer-reviewed version is issued every four months. The published evidence is summarized and specific recommendations made for patient care.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused by this but as already stated this has been due to budgetary issues.

SFX

Over the next few weeks we will be introducing a new service called SFX.

SFX is an OpenURL linking resolver that allows users to link directly to the electronic full-text for a reference (the SFX target) plus other linking options. It is similar to the Links@OVID service that you will be familiar with but will be available from a lot more databases and not just confined to the OVID collection.

You will therefore notice the SFX target icon against references which will open up a new window and display information on where to access the full-text of the reference.

This initial implementation of SFX will only provide the user with details on linking through to our subscription resources, however the way that SFX is set-up means that there will always be an SFX target even when we do not have full-text, so in some cases you will not be directed to full-text. However as this service develops we will be offering the user the option to request the article via a document delivery service if it is not available in full-text. The intention therefore is not to fully promote the service until other features are in place but as you will begin to see the SFX icons appearing when you are searching the databases it is important that you are aware of this new development.

If you would like more information about the SFX service, please contact derek.boyle@nes.scot.nhs.uk

If you would like to read up a bit more on SFX, you can do so at http://www.exlibrisgroup.com/category/SFXOverview
